Things I'm loving right now

I love June Bug... there is something very homey and sweet about a kitty sitting in the windowsill or curled up in a ball. I love how she plays with Lucy and how she cuddles the kids in the morning. I love how she licks her fur where people have pet her because her fur is too good for us. :)

I love this "fairy chair" that Kayla's friend Bailey created out of a flower.

I love summer reading programs. The kids have been reading and filling up their charts and Kayla reads to Collin several times a day. I love that they love books and I love that this is how I found them first thing in the morning!

I love having a garden to tend to and finding our first red juicy tomato yesterday.

I love that Collin brought this to me and said, "I made a 3 dimensional barn Mommy."
He built it out of k'nex.... wow!

I love that Kayla made this picture on an etch a sketch at a restaurant and showed it to me with her toothless grin. Those teeth can take as long as they please to come in... I love her this way!

I love this kid's face. Could he be any flippin' cuter????

I love our pool umbrella. It was my Mother's Day gift and we Moms really do use it.
When I have friends here we sit under it and eat and drink while the kids swim.

I love Prescott. Known for it's beautiful picturesque town square, it has been used in many movies. Whiskey Row, Bill's Pizza and Prescott Brew Pub are our favorites.
But even above that, the kids and I LOVE the huge courthouse and sprawling lawn.
People lay under the trees and picnic, eat ice cream and just hang out. We made our third trip there last week and it's so fun to have a little vacation spot that you're totally familiar with and where you can walk everywhere you go.

Roly Poly Sanctuary

When I asked Kayla and Collin why they were playing with bricks their response surprised me.
They said, "We're not playing with bricks! We built a roly poly sanctuary and there are tons of roly polies living here."
Sure enough, there are. Every time they find one they transport it to their colony.
The roly polies seem quite happy there.

My second grader

Since Kayla was homeschooled this year we did not have "school pictures".
So I decided that this is her second grade picture. What a cutie!

Dear Kayla

I am proud of who you are.
While having one of our frequent "clothing disagreements" I couldn't help but smile on the inside while I remembered back to all the moments that reflected YOU.

I remember when you were preschool aged you didn't want to play with Barbies.
When I asked you what you didn't like about them you said they "were too fancy".
I remember you secretly confiding in me when you were 5 that you didn't like to dress up like a princess. You said it was boring and you'd rather be a dinosaur.
I remember hearing about you on the kindergarten playground. The girls were under a table and called out to ask you to "join our club".
You cantered by them (because you were a unicorn) and yelled, "No thanks. I've got my own club and I'm the only member."
I remember your outrage at the bathing suits you had to choose from. "Why do girls have to show so much skin? Why can't we be comfortable in our bathing suits?"
And each year since I have spent many an hour looking for the "boy short" cut in girls' bathing suits for you.
I remember your complaints about low rise jeans, and I remember all of my comments, "can you please go back upstairs and put on something that matches?"
This morning you gave me your standard response. "When are you going to learn Mama, that fashion doesn't matter. Only survival. I don't care what I look like so why do you?"

I had about had it at that point and was boiling over. First I said, "OK fine well then you no longer get to watch Project Runway with me since fashion doesn't matter"
You stuttered a bit and said, "well I mean... it does matter it's just..."
It was definitely time for a chat.
I brought you over to me and said, "For some people fashion is art and it is interesting to see. You like seeing it yourself or you wouldn't beg me to watch Project Runway all the time." You agreed with that point.
Then I said, "However, I do not, nor will I ever expect you to care about fashion, dress a certain way or do anything you don't care about doing. But you must have your hair brushed every morning and you must wear something that is clean and decent looking. And the reason you must do those things is because it shows people you are well cared for. If you go out with your hair sticking in all directions and a wrinkly t shirt that doesn't match your shorts it looks as though your mother doesn't take good care of you, doesn't it? It is perfectly fine to wear hand me down clothes (most of ours are in this house) and to wear simple outfits, but you must at least take care of yourself each morning and stop fighting me on it."
"Your health and happiness and the mark that you leave upon this earth are far more important than what you wear. I realize that. And many people have no choice but to wear the same shirt every day, and some have no shirt at all. But you have several shirts and dresses, so at least put a second of thought in to it OK?"

I don't think you had ever looked at it that way, so I'm hoping we don't continue this discussion every morning.
Through all of these moments, though, I am proud of who you are. You crack me up. Many people predict that you are a budding feminist and tree hugger. I love it.
Go for it! Be who you want to be Kayla and revel in it!
But could you please stop putting that pink shirt with those orange shorts, Please??

Mother's Day and more

The kids both got seats at the school we've been waiting for!
Yay! We had hoped for AM TOPS but they only had PM available.
It turns out that Collin's two best buddies also got in to PM kinder there and one of Kayla's Brownie troop-mates is also in PM.
So we're really happy with how that has turned out. I'm going to take some time
to work on our home and cooking and having some more "me" time. I'm also going to
begin advertising so that I can hopefully book one family session a week.
We had a wonderful Mother's Day weekend. Chris, Kelsey and the grandparents all came over for swimming, hanging out and good food, cake and pie.
Chris asked the kids what they liked best about me and Kayla said she liked how funny I am. Collin said he likes that I sleep with them when they are sick. Awww!
We had some visitors during our party... a HUGE swarm of Bees. We heard a noise, which my brain registered as a plane in the distance. Finally Chris asked, "What's that noise?" The next thing we know Tim is yelling, "Bees!" and I see a black cloud coming our way. We grabbed the kids and ran inside. It was all pretty darn scary.
We will remember it for a long time!
But all in all it was a beautiful afternoon!

Our CA trip with Grandma Elephant

My favorite things about our weekend trip:
1. Driving up the hill towards Manhatten Beach and seeing the sparkling ocean appear before us.
2. Playing tag with Collin in the surf.
3. Seeing Kayla decorate her sandcastle with such thought and precision.
4. Watching the kids collect sea shells.
5. Watching Grandma and the kids walk towards the water.
6. Eating dinner (twice) at Il Fornaio.
7. Seeing Grandma experience her first 4d movie (Shrek)
8. 3 Churros for the price of 2.
9. Sitting in the soak zone at the Waterworld show and getting SOAKED while Grandma and I laughed.
10. Seeing Collin meet Scooby Doo
11. Watching Kayla dance with the Universal Studios characters.
12. Watching Kayla and Grandma on the Jurassic Park ride come crashing in to the water.
- so much more that will come to me over the days as we continue to remember and talk about our wild and crazy adventure!!

Kayla's Author Day

Kayla has been working on a writing project for some time now with her writing and math teacher. We were invited (by pink invitation with butterflies) to join Kayla and Mrs. K on Monday afternoon for her author day, where she would present her project to us. The project was a book and a fabulous one at that! She was sooo smiley the whole time she was presenting the book. It was adorable.
Kayla has been working on the use of similes, onomatopoeia, alliteration, personification and hyperbole's. We are so proud of her!
Turn the volume up!!

Photography Mom

Each Brownie Mom has to have a job and mine is photography.
So I took pictures of each girl in the troop and the leader asked me if I would
put together something special with the pictures for their end of year ceremony and party.
So photography- yes I can do that. Putting something creative together? No- not my cup of tea. But luckily my creative friend Bev who is marvelously talented comes up with ideas in a jiffy.
Here is what she came up with: we are making one for each girl (a mini scrapbook with their initial as the cover)
Bev rocks!!

Our little soccer player

I love seeing my little soccer player in his uniform, hair spikey and sweaty running down the field or playing goalie. He is an aggressive goalie and is known to make other kids cry when he plays that position. Kinda funny.
But even on the field he tries hard and he really gives his all and that's what we are most proud of. He gets better every week!

Here Collin is blocking a goal... kicked that puppy right back out there!
