An incredible night!

Something amazing happened in our house tonight.
Our nephews, Jack and Nicky are here to spend the night.
Jack told me that he heard that fairies visit Kayla when
she sleeps. He asked if he could write a note asking them
to visit and to wake him up so he could actually see one.
So they wrote the note and said the fairy chant by the window.
Well, a fairy didn't wake him up, BUT I went in to take a picture
of the kids sleeping and I caught a fairy on my camera.
She appears to be sprinkling some kind of magic dust on Jack as he sleeps.
WOW- I can't wait to tell him when he wakes up!

Annie

Kayla has had drama camp all week and they practiced the musical, Annie.
The performance was yesterday and it was GREAT!!
So fun to watch.
The girls all had such sweet little singing voices and everyone nailed their lines.
This was Kayla's first musical and it was much more work than simple plays.
There was singing, script and coreography to learn.
I'm glad she got the experience!
She was her usual expressive funny self.
She also had her first sleepover last night at Emmy's house. It was hard on me,
but I got through it and she had a blast.
It also gave Collin and I an open night to have a date. I took him to dinner and he took me to Mr. Bigg's.
Then Tim and Collin and I had a sleepover and a special breakfast, all about Collin this morning.
He really enoyed himself, and so did we!

90210

Anyone who knew me in my high school and college years
knows that I was and still am a die hard 90210 fan.
There isn't a show I've ever loved as much... (well, Little House on the Prairie is a close second)
The news is out: 90210 is coming back along with Donna, Kelly and Brenda.
And I am sooooo there!
You should be there too!

Friends

Jackie, Devyn, Kayla and I had a girls night out in Denver yesterday.
Jackie and I could talk for hours and Devyn and Kayla are becoming such good
buddies.
Which makes it all the harder to say good-bye.
Which is what we did last night to two of our good friends.
Each playdate or get-together we have over the next week is going
to be bittersweet.
Because this time we know we will be in AZ long-term.
And if we do move again, it will probably not be back to Colorado Springs.
So it's a tough week! But our excitement about the move is keeping us afloat. :)

Abby... smoking?

I quickly walked from the computer room to the kitchen.
I went to the cupboard, got a glass for some water...
and then walked two steps backwards.
I knew I'd seen something strange out of the corner of my eye.
Why was my Golden Retriever laying by the couch
with what looked to be a cigarette hanging out of her mouth?
And why did she look so happy and relaxed... it seemed to really suit her.
On closer inspection, I realized that she had stolen Lucy's miniature sized
rawhide bone, and didn't want to give it up, even though she was falling asleep.
Phew! I was worried for a second that there were cigarettes in the house.
And then worried that I'd try to bum one from my dog.

Lucy

I realized I haven't sent or posted any recent pictures of Lucy.
Here are a couple taken today!
Isn't she sweet?

While waiting for the fireworks show in GJ, we took pictures of eachother for fun.
Great Grandpa and Grandma Simon

I love this boy

Anyone who knows our family well, knows that the past couple of years have been wonderful but challenging ones with the new member of our family who is a Wharton through and through. Which means he is independent, hot-headed and determined.
I try not to worry (although it's hard sometimes) because I'm sure he'll end up being a CEO of a major company or in some sort of position of power.
It is his goal in life to have power. :)

But he is so many other things too and no matter how "strong-willed" he can be,
I could stare in to his big brown eyes all day long and hold him all day if he'd let me.
Holding my son in my arms when he was born was such a powerful experience.
There is something about that mother son connection. I was in love.
And every so often he will say or do something, or just look a certain way and I'll feel that way all over again.
One of those moments occurred on the 4th of July at the GJ parade.
Just looking at him with his baggy red shirt and jean shorts and backwards baseball cap, I felt this feeling of awe... "This is my little boy"
Waving his little flag, standing with his little tummy pushed forward.
As many adorable outfits as Kayla has had, this 4th of July, Collin wore one of my favorite outfits of all.

I love:
his baby blonde hair
his big brown eyes
his perfect nose
his wide feet (like Mom's)
his athleticism
his determination
his imagination
his ability to come up with such great names
how he loves to be held when he wakes up in the morning
how he gets scared at night and asks Kayla to "petect me"
how angry he gets at restaurants if they don't have something he asks for. (it's pretty funny)
his little lisp
his sensitive heart
how he likes to hold hands and pray before every dinner
and about 100 other things I could think of.

4th of July

Our 4th of July was spent in beautiful Grand Junction (my new favorite town in Colorado) The main street downtown is lined with sculptures and great restaurants and bars. The people are so nice and the police officers ride around on bikes handing stickers out to kids and chatting with everyone.
We had such a great time!
We watched a neat mountain town parade and then played with poppers and sparklers until it was time for fireworks. The show was great and we really enjoyed being together.
Collin looked so cute watching the parade waving to everyone.

The best part of the night though was at Pablo's pizza.
A big group of guys (and one girl) :) came in to the restaurant in dark dirty clothes with the badges on their shirts reading, "Roosevelt HotShots".
We were so intrigued as to what their jobs were.
So Kayla went over and asked them and we found out that they are forest firefighters!
They had just gotten in after fighting a nearby forest fire.
We ended up getting a picture of Kayla with the group. What great sports they were.
Collin wanted one too so he went over and asked for a picture and once again these great guys (and girl) were quick to agree and be good sports. :)

Dinosaur Dig, July 3rd, 2008

At 8:15 on July 3rd, Kayla, Nana, Papa and I waited outside the Dinosaur Journey museum of Western Colorado in Fruita.
There were about 11 or 12 other people waiting as well.
The buses picked us up and drove us to the area they are currently working on.
After we learned about the area (this was a lake that many bones had been washed in to, and we would find mostly Allosaurus and Diplodicus bones) we got to work.
We used hammers, screwdrivers, paintbrushes and some other common tools to chip and slice through the sandstone.

Kayla found the first bone of the day (pictures below) She spotted what appeared to be bone and after careful extraction, she pulled out a piece of Allosaurus rib bone.
She was so excited! The team, including one paleontologist and several employees and volunteers, take special care to map and log each find, so Kayla's name and find are in their books now!
My Dad found an Allosaurus tooth. It was amazing to see the edge still perfectly serrated.
They had plenty of Gatorade and water for us and provided us with an amazing lunch.
It was so hard to stop working though. We compared it to slot machines.
You just want to keep going and going once you find something. It is truly addicting!
It is such a wild feeling to be touching the bone or a tooth of a dinosaur and knowing you're the first one to touch it since it was on the animal's body millions of years ago!

It was hot, dusty grueling work, but it was an experience of a lifetime.
This is something we will definitely do again!

Grand Junction

Well we made it!
We are here in beautiful Grand Junction and the weather is perfect.
We drove halfway from Phoenix to Kayenta yesterday and stayed in a Holiday Inn there.
We shared a hotel room with Nana and Papa, which was really fun.
From Kayenta we had about a 5 hour drive today to Grand Junction.
We stopped at a dinosaur museum, which was fabulous!
We can't get enough dinosaur stuff I tell ya. We stopped to see dinosaur tracks as well!
We went through beautiful Moab... what an amazing drive it was.
My Mom and Dad followed us in one car and Collin, K and I were in our minivan.
My favorite part of today was when the kids and I started getting a little stir-crazy in the car. So we began making up ridiculous operas and songs about how weird Uncle Chris is, why it's not good to crash in to mountains, how we can get away from a cop trying to give us a ticket, etc...
I wish I'd been able to record some of the songs... it got pretty hysterical.
We got to Grand Junction around dinner time and met Tim here. We were so happy to see him. Then we all went downtown and had pizza and checked out the brew pubs.
What a great start to our GJ trip!
Tomorrow is our dinosaur dig- I can't wait!
